Sutherland attorneys Jeffrey A. Friedman, Stephen P. Kranz and Diann L. Smith are speaking at the 15th Annual Paul J. Hartman State and Local Tax (SALT) Forum, October 28-30, 2008, at the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee.
Steve’s presentation entitled "How Can Business Benefit From Streamline Uniformity and Simplicity Provisions?" will discuss how business can benefit by getting the states where they do business to adopt those parts of the Streamline Agreement that add value without those states becoming "members" of Streamline. In some states, the politics do not allow business to benefit from the positive provisions of the Streamline Agreement.
Jeff is moderating a panel on "Ethical and Practical Considerations in Accounting for Income Taxes." This session will focus on the challenges that companies experience in complying with FAS 109 and FIN 48, including determining how to document income tax positions and calculations while also preserving privilege and confidentiality. The panel will explore best practices to preserve privilege while also responding to audit firms’ requests to substantiate financial statement positions, and will discuss audit firms’ acceptance of legal opinions and memoranda that support financial statement positions.
Diann is presenting the "Top Ten Cases to Watch" as they make their way through the justice system. While a few cases are at the Supreme Court level, others are not as far along but could still greatly impact the legal issues applicable to business taxes today.
