Two Sutherland Partners Recognized as 2016 Energy and Environmental Trailblazers by National Law Journal

May 25, 2016

ATLANTA and WASHINGTON—Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP is pleased to announce that Partners Jacob Dweck and Ram C. Sunkara have been recognized as National Law Journal “Energy and Environmental Trailblazers” for their significant contributions and pioneering work in the areas of energy and environmental law.

A group of National Law Journal editors reviewed hundreds of submissions, from which 48 individuals were recognized. Only eight law firms had more than one “Energy and Environmental Trailblazer.”

In their featured profiles, the National Law Journal recognized Mr. Dweck’s cutting-edge work over the past four decades in the LNG, futures, energy bankruptcy and other arenas, and praised his recent groundbreaking commodity “classification” in which the U.S. Government allowed the export of light crude oil for the first time. Mr. Sunkara is praised for his international energy-related deals and being at the forefront of helping clients achieve their corporate “green” initiatives.

“We are extremely proud to have two of our partners honored for playing such crucial roles in energy and environmental law,” said Sutherland Managing Partner Mark D. Wasserman. “This national recognition is a true reflection of Jake’s and Ram’s hard work and dedication to delivering superior client service. We congratulate them on this well-deserved honor.”

Mr. Dweck is a leading U.S. energy lawyer. For more than 40 years, Mr. Dweck has counseled the who’s who in the industry at the intersection of business and regulation. He is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, including the Burton Award for Legal Achievement, and was named a “Groundbreaking Lawyer” by Public Utilities Fortnightly. Mr. Dweck founded Sutherland’s LNG practice and the widely read LNG Law Blog, as well as the firm’s robust energy practices in creditors rights (post Enron Bankruptcy), international trade, and oil spill risk management and incident response. He has led Sutherland’s Energy Government Enforcement practice and, throughout his career, has represented clients before the CFTC, FERC, EPA, U.S. Customs and other agencies. He has contributed to studies by Brookings, the Columbia Center on Global Energy Policy and others; presented at numerous conferences, including CERAWeek, EIA events, UT Gas & Power Institute, Texas Bar, Platts and Argus conferences; and is quoted frequently in the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Houston Chronicle, Bloomberg, Reuters and other publications. Mr. Dweck also served on the Board of the Canadian American Business Council from 2008 to 2014.

Mr. Sunkara is a newly appointed member of Sutherland’s Executive Committee and chairs the firm’s Distributed Generation/Corporate Procurement, Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs) and Petrochemical teams. He is at the forefront of helping clients such as Microsoft Corporation, Target, Solvay Chemicals and several other Fortune companies develop, structure and implement innovative initiatives and transactions aimed at achieving their renewable and sustainability goals, and is widely perceived to be a thought leader in structuring procurement transactions and green tariffs across the United States and abroad. Mr. Sunkara has one of the leading practices in this space and is the “go-to” energy counsel for some of the largest commercial energy consumers in the world, representing a wide range of technology companies, financial institutions, large “big box” retailers, data center developers, industrial manufacturers, petrochemical facilities, hospital complexes and other commercial clients that have large electric and/or thermal energy loads. He is featured in a range of “best of” and “who’s who” lists, such as Chambers USA: Guide to Leading Business Lawyers, The Legal 500 United States and Super Lawyers. Most recently, Mr. Sunkara was named to the “Rainmakers” list by Diversity & the Bar, a publication of the Minority Corporate Counsel Association, which profiles the professional successes of leading diverse attorneys.
