Sutherland's Randolph Thrower Honored with Namesake Award by Court of Federal Claims Bar Association

May 16, 2002

ATLANTA (May 16, 2002) – The Court of Federal Claims Bar Association recently announced the establishment of The Randolph W. Thrower Award in honor one of its founders and first President, Sutherland attorney Randolph W. Thrower. The Award will recognize exceptional individual efforts to advance and promote the goals of the Bar Association and will be presented annually beginning this year at the Court's 20th anniversary celebration to be held October 4-5 in Washington, DC. Mr. Thrower, who served a one-year term as Court of Federal Claims Bar Association President in 1989, plans to attend the event.

Randolph W. Thrower joined Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP in 1936 and has practiced in the firm's Washington and Atlanta offices. He works primarily in the area of federal taxation, including civil and criminal tax controversies, litigation, estate planning and administration, general corporate and individual tax-related matters.

Mr. Thrower has been the recipient of many distinguished awards for his extensive public, professional and government service, among them the American Bar Association Medal, the ABA's highest honor, in 1993. He was also the recipient in 1995 of the Court of Federal Claims Special Service Award, given in recognition of his many contributions to the Court, and received the Tax Section's Distinguished Service Award for 1996. The honor bestowed upon him by The Court of Federal Claims Bar Association will be a first.

"I have followed the work of the Court of Federal Claims Bar Association with great interest and deeply appreciate the creation of the annual award in my name," responded Thrower upon learning of the honor. Mr. Thrower is a past President of the American Bar Foundation and served for 10 years on its Executive Committee. He served as a long-term member of the American Bar Association ("ABA") House of Delegates, Chair of the Section of Taxation and of the Special Committee on Survey of Legal Needs, member of the Task Force on Minorities in the Law and member of the Council of the Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities. He has served as President of the Atlanta Bar Association, the Atlanta Lawyers Club and the Atlanta Legal Aid Society.

"Mr. Thrower has graciously agreed to allow us to honor him in this significant and meaningful way," stated Lewis S. Wiener, President of the Court of Federal Claims Bar Association.

Mr. Weiner, counsel in Sutherland's Washington office, also serves as President of the Bar Association's Board of Governors and is a member of the Court of Federal Claims Advisory Council. Prior to joining Sutherland in 2001, Mr. Wiener served as a trial lawyer with the United States Department of Justice where he was twice recognized by the Attorney General for special achievement in the handling of litigation matters on behalf of the United States.
