ATLANTA (May 4, 2005) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan is pleased to announce that Charles T. Lester, Jr., a partner with the firm, has received the James M. Collier Award from the State Bar of Georgia. The award was presented by Rudolph Patterson, Vice President of the Georgia Bar Foundation, at the April 2005 Board of Governors meeting.
The James M. Collier Award is presented annually to one person for their extraordinary efforts in support of the Bar Foundation and its mission. The award honors the financial support of Jim Collier who, with the Bank of Dawson, set a standard of support for the Georgia Bar Foundation.
"Without Charlie's guidance in a number of areas over the years, the Georgia Bar Foundation likely would have made missteps that could have reduced its ability to help fund a number of law-related organizations throughout Georgia," said Mr. Patterson. "Furthermore, his work and the work of his firm in assisting the Bar Foundation were done pro bono in recognition of the crucial need served by the Georgia Bar Foundation."
As Co-Chair of Sutherland's Bar and Public Service Committee, Mr. Lester devotes much of his time to pro bono work. As Past President of the State Bar of Georgia, he was a founder and Co-Chair of the State Bar's Diversity Program. He has also been President of Atlanta Legal Aid, an officer and director of Georgia Legal Services, a member of the Chief Justice Commission on Indigent Defense, and Co-Chair of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. Mr. Lester has been recognized for his pro bono work and service with The Anti-Defamation League's Elbert P. Tuttle Award, the State Bar of Georgia Distinguished Service Award, the H. Sol Clark Pro Bono Service Award, and the Women and Minorities in the Profession Committee Commitment to Equality Award.
The American Lawyer magazine's annual "AmLaw 200" Pro Bono List recently ranked Sutherland 16th for its firm-wide pro bono efforts and named the firm a "Pro Bono Powerhouse." The list distinguishes the pro bono efforts of the nation's 200 highest-grossing law firms, as designated in the magazine's July 2004 issue, ranked by their score for 2003.
