NEW YORK—Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP is pleased to announce that Partner Robert D. Owen has been honored with the Al Cortese Award by Lawyers for Civil Justice (LCJ) for his pro bono work supporting the organization in its efforts to reform the federal civil rules. He accepted the award on Monday at the LCJ membership meeting in Washington, D.C., which was attended by more than 100 corporate counsel and attorneys.
“Bob is a dedicated leader who works actively to improve the legal field through his work in both the office and community,” said Mark D. Wasserman, managing partner at Sutherland. “We are proud of his dedication to the legal community and to restoring balance in the justice system. His service is a true testament to his commitment to the practice of law and is a standard to be aspired to by attorneys within our firm and beyond.”
This prestigious recognition is awarded annually in honor of Al Cortese, whose tenacious pursuit of balance and fairness in the civil justice system made a lasting contribution. Mr. Owen has donated countless hours of his time shaping LCJ’s advocacy work related to discovery reforms. He pioneered the practice of e-discovery litigation, and his knowledge, experience and passion have helped strengthen the LCJ’s advocacy work and better inform the Rules Committee about the need for discovery reform.
Mr. Owen is active in the legal community as a member of the Advisory Board of the Georgetown Law Advanced Institute for eDiscovery, New York City Bar Association and Federal Bar Council (Second Circuit). Additionally, he is president of the non-profit organization, Electronic Discovery Institute.
At Sutherland, Mr. Owen is Partner in Charge of the firm’s New York office. With decades of commercial litigation experience in New York and around the country, he is a nationally recognized adviser to financial services, energy and technology companies. Chambers consistently rates Mr. Owen as one of five first rank leading individuals in e-discovery nationally. He has handled hundreds of cases before federal and state courts, as well as arbitration panels throughout the United States. His accomplishments as a trial lawyer have been recognized by the National Institute of Trial Advocacy, who has invited him to teach trial skills at its flagship national program in Boulder, Colorado on several occasions.
ABOUT LAWYERS FOR CIVIL JUSTICE
Lawyers for Civil Justice is a partnership of leading corporate counsel and defense bar practitioners that was formed to address the soaring cost of litigation in America. Boasting board members from many Fortune 500 companies across the United States, LCJ forges alliances among its members and leverages the strength of those alliances to help restore and maintain balance in the civil justice system. Today’s high litigation costs are negatively affecting the ability of American companies to compete effectively in the global marketplace. Additionally, the high costs of discovery, particularly e-discovery, are creating a barrier for entry into our courts, and forcing litigants to seek other forms of dispute resolution. LCJ’s activities directly address these issues.
