Sutherland Partner Nicholas Christakos Receives Prestigious Whitney North Seymour Award from Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law

December 18, 2015

WASHINGTON—Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP is pleased to announce that Partner Nicholas T. Christakos has been recognized with the prestigious Whitney North Seymour Award by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law for his many years of service to the organization as General Counsel, Director and Co-Chair. The award was presented to Mr. Christakos on December 14 during the Committee’s annual award reception in New York City.

The Whitney North Seymour Award is the highest award given to attorneys by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, which is dedicated to securing equal justice for all through the rule of law. It recognizes a Lawyers’ Committee Board member who exemplifies the legacy of service and integrity of Whitney North Seymour, one of the Lawyers’ Committee’s founders.

“We celebrate with Nick on this tremendous and well-deserved honor,” said Sutherland Managing Partner Mark D. Wasserman. “The Lawyers’ Committee is an outstanding organization, and Nick has continued the firm’s legacy of service to the Committee as a leader on many important projects over the years. This recognition is a fitting tribute to Nick’s commitment to civic leadership, and it is an honor to have him as our partner.”

Mr. Christakos is active in a variety of public service and community activities. He has served as General Counsel to the Lawyers’ Committee for most of the last 14 years, except for a two-year term as Co-Chair of the Board of Directors and Trustees. He has also been a volunteer attorney for the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Legal Counsel for the Elderly, and has served as President of the Harvard Club of Washington DC and a Regional Director of the Harvard Alumni Association. Mr. Christakos is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Genetics, Nutrition and Health, an affiliate of the American Association for World Health.

At Sutherland, Mr. Christakos serves as the firm’s general counsel, and he has 33 years of broad-based litigation experience, representing clients in insurance, reinsurance, Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), securities, employment law, automotive franchise and general contract disputes. He also advises clients, including other law firms, regarding legal ethics.

“Many of our attorneys have served the Lawyers’ Committee over the years, including retired Partner Charlie Lester, who received this distinguished award a decade ago,” said Sutherland Partner John H. Fleming, who heads the firm’s Pro Bono and Public Service Committee. “Nick perfectly exemplifies the characteristics for this award and it is wonderful to see him being recognized for his invaluable contributions to public service.”

Sutherland has a long and distinguished history of public service beginning with the work of its founding partners, Bill Sutherland and Elbert Tuttle, on habeas corpus cases, including Johnson v. Zerbst and Herndon v. Lowry (in which they worked with Whitney North Seymour), in the 1930s. The tradition of public service that they began continues today through the efforts of the firm’s many attorneys and staff who provide civic leadership and pro bono legal representation to individuals and organizations within their local communities.
