HOUSTON—Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP is pleased to announce that Partner Juan C. Garcia has been selected to the Board of Directors for the iconic Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which has handed out more than $375 million in student scholarships since its founding in 1932.
Mr. Garcia currently serves on the Legal Advisory Committee of the highly regarded rodeo organization, which operates through a network of 30,000 volunteers. Mr. Garcia also serves as a Senior Vice Chairman of the Show’s Go Tejano Committee. That group alone is responsible for raising roughly half a million dollars each year.
“We are proud of Juan and congratulate him on this achievement,” said Daniel Johnson, Partner in Charge of Sutherland’s Houston office. “The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Board of Directors is a very prestigious group comprised of substantial benefactors and people who have volunteered for many years. Juan has devoted himself to community service while maintaining a thriving practice, and this distinction recognizes his many contributions to our community.”
Overall in 2015, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo provided 423 Texas high school graduates with more than $7.5 million in scholarships.
“I am especially gratified and humbled to be confirmed to the board of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which does so much to help hard-working young people pursue their dreams,” said Mr. Garcia. “Nearly 200 of this year’s scholarship recipients will be the first in their families to attend college, and more than 120 are the first in their families to graduate from high school.”
Mr. Garcia currently is completing his term as president of the Hispanic Bar Association of Houston, which has organized continuing legal education seminars for lawyers seeking to help undocumented children crossing the Texas border. Under his leadership, that group has awarded more than $40,000 in scholarships for law students and high school graduates. He recently was honored by the Texas Bar Foundation for his outstanding professional achievements and demonstrated commitment to the improvement of the Texas justice system.
At Sutherland, Mr. Garcia litigates complex commercial and tort cases across a variety of industries, including the oil and gas, real estate, and insurance sectors. Additionally, he represents governmental bodies, such as regional transit authorities, on land acquisitions through condemnation, in addition to guiding clients in their responses to catastrophic incidents and the regulatory investigations that follow.
