ATLANTA—Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP is pleased to announce that Of Counsel Katherine Meyers Cohen was recognized with an “Attorney of the Year Award” during the annual Pro Bono Partnership of Atlanta (PBPA) appreciation reception held March 15.
The “Attorney of the Year Award” honors individuals for their dedicated service to the PBPA, an organization that has paired more than 2,000 volunteer attorneys with approximately 670 nonprofit clients. Ms. Cohen was recognized for her willingness to take on very complex tax matters for nonprofit organizations who otherwise would not be able to afford an attorney and would have a very difficult time navigating the tax system themselves.
“Kitty is an excellent attorney and a stand-out volunteer who is always willing to help with the more difficult cases, and has made a dramatic difference for her pro bono clients,” said Sutherland Partner John H. Fleming, who heads the firm’s Pro Bono Committee. “We congratulate her on this wonderful honor and thank Kitty for exemplifying Sutherland’s values and commitment to helping those who need legal aid but cannot afford it.”
Since 1987, Ms. Cohen has served as an outside tax counsel to the State Bar of Georgia and counsel to the Georgia Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of the Supreme Court of Georgia. She also serves exempt organizations such as quasi-governmental organizations and charities.
At Sutherland, Ms. Cohen manages tax issues affecting health care providers and other exempt organizations in her tax law practice. She oversees Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement, and fraud and abuse issues faced by the firm’s numerous nonprofit health care clients (teaching hospitals, medical faculty practice plans, HMOs, PPOs, pharmaceutical companies, physician joint ventures and insurance companies).
With a practice that is national in scope, Ms. Cohen counsels on legal and regulatory matters ranging from state administrative proceedings on Medicaid reimbursement disputes for specific clients to helping inform Congressional staff members about issues of concern. She also represents the firm’s tax-exempt clients, largely universities and academic medical centers, on exempt organization matters, including tax issues and filings relating to offshore assets.
Sutherland’s relationship with the PBPA dates back to the founding of the organization 11 years ago. Last year, the PBPA recognized Sutherland with the “2014 Cornerstone Award” for its initial financial contributions to support the organization’s founding in 2005 and its continued support every year since, such as providing space within its Atlanta office to house PBPA staff. The firm also provides varied legal services from registering trademarks to updating human resources policies.
