October 16, 2014
ATLANTA, NEW YORK and WASHINGTONSutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP is pleased to announce that five attorneys have been selected by Expert Guides as among the top “Women in Business Law” in their respective nationwide practice areas. The attorneys recognized are:
  • Jennifer W. Fletcher, Construction
  • Cynthia M. Krus, Corporate Governance
  • Cynthia R. Shoss, Insurance and Reinsurance
  • Giovanna T. Sparagna, Tax
  • Carol P. Tello, Tax
Published by the Legal Media Group, the results are the culmination of a biennial survey and extensive global research, which includes feedback from in-house counsel and senior legal professionals who nominate fellow lawyers for quality of work and overall reputation.
“Due to their outstanding achievements, these five attorneys are very deserving of this national recognition of the best women in law,” said Sutherland Managing Partner Mark D. Wasserman. “It’s always an honor when our attorneys are recognized for the complex and challenging legal work they do on behalf of Sutherland clients.”
Ms. Fletcher, a partner and co-leader of Sutherland’s Litigation Practice Group, focuses her practice on construction industry issues exclusively. As lead counsel, she has successfully resolved complex construction disputes throughout the country and internationally, representing construction managers, developers, general contractors, owners, municipalities and specialty contractors. Ms. Fletcher, a fellow in the American College of Construction Lawyers, serves on the Executive Board and will serve as President in 2017-2018.
Ms. Krus, a partner and co-leader of Sutherland’s Corporate and Financial Services Group, is a corporate and securities attorney with more than 20 years of experience counseling clients on matters such as securities offerings, corporate governance, crisis management, whistleblower response, disclosure, executive compensation, proxy contests and shareholder matters. She works extensively with public and private companies and alternative investment funds on capital formation transactions to grow their businesses. Ms. Krus also develops strategic plans and timing for critical decisions in all aspects of their businesses, including mergers and acquisitions, going-private transactions and reorganizations. She is the author of the Corporate Secretary’s Answer Book, which is updated annually, and frequently speaks at industry conferences on regulatory, corporate governance and capital-raising issues.
Ms. Shoss, co-leader of Sutherland’s Insurance Practice Group and a partner in the firm’s New York office, has counseled clients on life insurance, property/casualty insurance, health insurance and other sectors of the insurance industry for more than 30 years. She has provided insurance regulatory advice to Fortune 500 companies, state departments of insurance and attorneys general, investment bankers and multinational clients and is recognized in particular for her experience with demutualizations, mergers and acquisitions, conversions and other restructurings. In 2014, she was the first woman in the 100-year history of the Association of Life Insurance Counsel to receive its Buist M. Anderson Distinguished Service Award for lifetime service to the life insurance bar and industry.
Ms. Sparagna, a retired long-time tax partner continuing to serve as Of Counsel in Sutherland’s Tax Practice Group, advises U.S. and foreign multinational corporations on international tax planning and controversy matters involving cross-border financing, royalty structures, mergers and acquisitions (including inversions), contract manufacturing structures, cross-border service and supply agreements, and repatriation planning.  Ms. Sparagna is a fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel.
Ms. Tello, a partner in Sutherland’s DC office, focuses her practice primarily on international taxation matters, including a range of cross-border tax planning and Internal Revenue Service controversy matters for both business entities and individuals. Her work for insurance companies in the cross-border context includes restructuring transactions and advising on inbound corporate transactions, withholding matters and treaty interpretation issues. Ms. Tello is a fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel.
