Emory Public Interest Committee Recognizes Retired Sutherland Partner Charles T. Lester, Jr.

February 9, 2009

ATLANTA (February 9, 2009) – Sutherland announces retired Partner Charles T. (Charlie) Lester Jr. will receive the Lifetime Commitment to Public Service Award by the Emory Public Interest Committee (EPIC) during its Inspiration Awards Ceremony and Reception on February 10, 2009.

Mr. Lester, a 1964 Emory College graduate and 1967 Emory Law graduate, will receive the award from the Honorable Clarence Cooper for his dedication to community and pro bono service. Before retiring from Sutherland, Mr. Lester served as the Pro Bono and Community Service Chairman for more than five years. During his 30 years with Sutherland, he provided pro bono legal representation for disability, civil rights and voting rights cases.

"Charlie inspires us all," said Managing Partner Mark D. Wasserman. "His commitment to service and many years of pro bono leadership demonstrate the importance of giving back to our communities and using the law to serve others."

Mr. Lester serves on the Georgia Supreme Court Committee on Civil Justice and was president of the State Bar of Georgia from 1992 to 1993. He also received Emory Law’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2004.

Upon Mr. Lester’s retirement from Sutherland, Partner Judith A. O’Brien assumed the role of Pro Bono Partner on behalf of the firm.
