ATLANTA—Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP is pleased to announce that Partner N. Jerold Cohen has been recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Daily Report, Fulton County’s official legal publication and Georgia's leading source for legal news and information. As a part of its 125th anniversary, the Daily Report recognized individuals who have left a lasting imprint on the legal history of Georgia.
“Jerry’s commitment to the Atlanta legal community, particularly to his tax law colleagues and clients, has made a lasting impact on all,” said Sutherland Managing Partner Mark D. Wasserman. “His exemplary service to Georgia’s tax system is demonstrated through his many leadership positions, awards and honors, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, and we applaud him on more than 40 years of outstanding service.”
A group of Daily Report editors reviewed a list of roughly 125 candidates, which was assembled by the publication’s editorial board and by nominations from peers and third-party organizations. Four judges and 18 lawyers were ultimately recognized.
Over his law career, Mr. Cohen has been involved in planning and structuring major corporate acquisitions and dispositions. He has successfully litigated federal and state tax cases and handled numerous matters before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), state revenue departments, and the U.S. Department of the Treasury. He has also handled legislative matters for clients, testified on a number of occasions before the two Congressional tax-writing committees and worked with the Joint Committee on Taxation on tax legislative matters.
In 1979, Jerry was appointed by President Carter to serve as Chief Counsel for the IRS, a position he held until 1981. He has served as the Chair of the Tax Section of the American Bar Association, Chair of the American College of Tax Counsel, and Chair of the IRS Advisory Committee. He currently is a member of the Board of the American Tax Policy Institute.
“This award is a fitting tribute to Jerry’s years of government service and lifelong dedication to advancing the legal profession," said Sutherland Tax Practice Group Leader W. Mark Smith. “We are very proud of his achievements, and it is a privilege and honor to have him as our partner.”
